HP# 1509 Little Bear Cave

Little Bear Cave is located in North Central Arkansas, Newton County. It contains approximately 3 miles of highly decorated passages and large rooms, with a vertical extent exceeding 200 ft. below the entrance. The caves large size, abundance of speleothems, generally dry caving conditions, and easy access has attracted many curious visitors and caving enthusiast's both locally and regionally.

The Cave - For ease of understanding the cave is divided into two parts; The Loop Route and The New Discovery sections.

The Loop Route - The caves single entrance is located on the east side of a 600 foot diameter sinkhole. This sinkhole represents the ceiling collapse of a once very large chamber. Once inside the entrance, a complete circle (approximately 1800 feet) can be traversed around the outside wall perimeter of this huge collapsed chamber. This unique Loop Route is difficult to traverse due to numerous climbs, crawls, squeezes, and steep sloping passages. it is extremely confusing to find the route through the massive breakdowns and multi-levels encountered throughout this area. Many large rooms and passages branch off the radius of the loop, the largest room is over 800 feet long. Total passage length in this area is approximately 1.5 miles. Outstanding speleothem deposits are scattered throughout this section. A few massive stalagmites measure over 20 feet high and 20 feet in diameter. Huge flow stones are in contrast to more delicate stalactites and helictites. A few of the largest helictites are 1 to 2 feet long.

The New Discovery Section - This area of relatively recent discoveries include around 2.5 miles of known passages. Branching off the Loop Route, this meandering series of passages connect in intervals with large chambers. The largest chamber in this area exceeds 700 feet in length. Several passages branch from the main artery, many of which are not completely explored. Crawling, squeezing or climbing are often required in order to reach certain points within this section. Trips are very strenuous due to the amazing number of obstacles between the caves entrance and this area. For the most part this section is extensively decorated with speleothems. Delicate helictite and stalactite thickets are frequently found intermingled among tall columns of stalagmites. Beautiful beige or white flowstones highlight many areas. Many unusual mineral types are wide spread throughout this area, such as, nail head (calcite) spar, large arogonite crystals, gypsum flowers and crusts, etc. Many of these formations areas remain pristine due to their location in remote areas of the system. Priced at $295,000
